The study and development of environmental performance indicators for waste tire recycling treatment system

For comparison of four waste tire recycling methods, two groups indicators (resource efficiency and environmental impact) were drafted and suggested which were coordinated to Taiwan’s goal for sustainable material management (SMM). The mentioned six indicators were estimated with input and output information through visiting factories as well as carbon inventories. The quantities of carbon emissions of auxiliary fuel, rubber asphalt and pyrolysis of waste tire were estimated through compiling carbon inventory and/or references. Another five environmental indicators which includes waste reduction, material recycling, energy recovery, carbon emissions and pollution emissions were suggested. For further comparison, the mentioned five environmental indicators were estimated for 2012-2015 for 1 ton of different waste tire recycling methods respectively. For enriching the project content, domestic and oversea experts were consulted as well as two experts meetings were hold. The research limit of the environmental management indicators of this project, the recycling factories without subsidy eligibility as well as different characteristic of various waste tire recoveries were considered, so the environmental management indicators are not appropriate to apply for subside estimation and the subsidy is not suitable for recycling plants. Besides, compiled the environmental issues concerned by tire manufactures, waste tire recycling status quo and trend in different countries and according to domestic situation, waste tire management strategies for short and long term were drafted to raise the environmental benefit of waste tire management progressively Two training courses which contains concept, development and major measures of developed countries of sustainable material management SMM and main results of this project, were hold. The goal of training was to find out the possible applications of the SMM concept on waste tire as well as other Due-Recycled items management.
